Tom Hooper

remember The Grapes of Wrath? Another band called called Ginger? Two things in common with both bands was the stellar writing/singing talents of bassist/front man Tom Hooper.

With his new solo cd The Unexplored Cosmos charting on commercial radio and an summer club tour in the works, Hooper makes his only stop in Toronto at nia Thursday August 8. With his history and a rep for marathon sets, we're in for a musical treat.

Special guest popsters Likewater warm things up with their take on "Grapes" inspired ballads and rockin country tinged pop.

acclaimed for "rocking as hard as the boys...", local singer/songwriter Analise Noronha is no stranger to embracing high decibel strength.

Currently on the promo trail supporting her self produced/engineered cd My Dog Is You, Noronha's writing flirts with romantic tragedy, swirling electric guitars, heavy hypnotic bass lines, pulsing beats and " words that provoke tears..." Slow and dark and thick and beautiful are also words that have been used to describe her material.

Taking time out from behind the scenes as studio engineer [James Brown, Blue Rodeo, Jennifer Lopez], she has amassed an air tight, all-star live band including Paul Brennan [formerly of The Odds, Big Sugar], Leo Valvassori [Johnny Favourite, Jay Englishman] and Chris Tait [formerly of Chalk Circle, Big Faith] to showcase something of a sonic experience, a rocking yet somehow tender venture into the land of deep, dark, loud.

Join Jason Gleed as he hits the stage with an engaging and intimate solo opening set.

girls with guitars

all good things come to an end. In this case not an end per say - think of it more as a building of excitement, cultivating the hype, the manufacturing of anticipation...

After two solid years the Toronto chapter of Girls With Guitars retires from monthly residency at nia with the promise of returning to the club every three months for a weekend date with special high profile guest billings...

Going out with a bang, the August installment of GWG is pleased to present Lorraine Segato [The Parachute Club], Dottie Cromier (Heartbreak Hill), Elana Harte (VSH), and host Linda M as they continue the tradition of songwriters in the round. An intimate setting as we get up close and personal with their stories, songs and reflections on being a girl with a guitar.

Look for the inaugural GWG quarterly kick off Saturday December 14. Details and guests to follow...

with a frenetic performance showcasing the band's penchant for heavy grooves and funky acoustic pop, locals Half Full have been stirring things up as a band to see. Having amassed a loyal following in the relatively short time on the scene, Half Full blend a retro 60's blues feel (think Janice...) with head nodding funk that's sure to get you at least dancing in your chair. Check them out here on Saturday August 24.

Opening the night is the eclectic pseudo cabaret meets crooning torch talents of local starlet in the making Lindi as she moves through material off her latest disc.

after years fronting acclaimed jump blues outfit Jake & the Blue Midnights, Jake Chisholm shifts gears to check out some new musical terrain with his new project aptly titled...Jake Chisholm.

With a combination of musicianship, passion and youthful energy, the fresh direction is an exciting mix of well-woven grooves and wanton melodies, drive and simple honesty are at the heart of Chisholm's new material.

Joining the bill sees one half of now defunct roots rockers The Undesirables, Corrin Raymond taking the solo route as he investigates the well worn path of country tinged ballads and smokey poetry with characteristic style and turn of phrase.

after a lenghly hiatus from the nia stage, the return of Kevin Fox is sure to celebrated as this insanely talented songwriter / much sought after string arranger / bass player / guitarist / cellist returns to lull us into his lair of sweet and smooth orchestral pop writing.

Unpretentious and refreshing, Fox's tunes move from a brooding intensity to delicate sensitivity while never venturing over the top. With an original take on what could be loosely described as folkie pop, Fox sets a mood and expands on it with a taste for lush compositions and smooth ambience that sets him apart from this genre.

Equally unique and creative duo Leah Salomaa and Chris Gartner heat things up with layers of texture and warmth underpinning the tasteful pop inherent to their writing. A journey through charted waters? Yes. Derivative and commonplace? No.
