Eighteen Answers For Eighteen Years

We had a whole bunch of keen and witty folks supply answers to last month's birthday quiz. Many had great suggestions for changes to C'est What including windows, fibre optic supplied natural light, and a patio. FYI, here are the answers to some of the more difficult questions:

  1. What is our highest priced entrée? The Alberta Angus Steak at $15.95
  2. How many “Beer Engines” do we have to dispense “real” or “cask” ales? We have five beer engines serving casked ales
  3. What is the only kind of beer sold at C’est What? Craft brewed beer
  4. What beer is “George Approved”? C'est What Coffee Porter or Homegrown Hemp Ale
  5. What beer does the fish endorse? Steam Whistle - take a look in the aquarium the next time you drop in for a pint
  6. From where do all of the selections on our wine list come? Ontario
  7. Where is the stage? In front of the fireplace to the right as you enter.

craft brewers glassSelling An Energy Retrofit To Your Board

Part of our monthly speaker series, Monday March 13, 6:00. Advance tickets available for $5. Ticket sales will be contributed to Toronto Dollar community projects.

Does your condo have an aging heating/cooling system that's a drain on your pocketbook and a burden to the environment? Want to learn how you and your neighbours can get your building to go green and save lots of money?

Mary Grant, Property Manager for Celebrity Place in Toronto, will help guide us through the ups and downs of energy retrofits and along the path to saving money and the environment.

Mary was instrumental in implementing a full-scale energy retrofit for her condo. By installing new light fixtures, an energy efficient hot water system and other features, Celebrity Place is saving over $100,000 off their yearly energy bill and was featured by Toronto's Better Buildings Partnership.

craft brewers glassOut Of The Cellar Wine Tasting Results

With some help from Angelo Rigitano, the creator of all but one of the nine wines on parade, we went back through fourteen years of wine making history on Wednesday February 15, 2006.

We were out to compare similar wines of different ages and see if age and good taste were related. Unfortunately, the results provide no clear answer to our question.

Conventional wisdom would suppose that the flavour profile of a fresh, fruity white wine like Riesling would decline after three to five years of cellaring. Well, the assembled tasters preferred the twelve year old Riesling to the two year old. On the other hand, red wines generally have a longer prime, but the tasters ranked the two year old Merlot ahead of the eight year old.

When it comes to taste, the only thing that can be said with certainty is that "there's no accounting for it."

The complete table of scores is available online

Next month, on Wednesday April 19, we will be featuring a vertical tasting of Riesling and Pinot Noir from the outstanding Niagara winery Henry Of Pelham.

radioBeer List Update

We continue our never-ending campaign to find new and interesting craft brews for the restless of tastebud.

This month's additions to our draught list will include Muskoka Honey Brown Lager, Stratford Porter, Trafalgar Celtic Ale, Walkerville Lager, and C'est What Casked Mild Brown Ale (dry-hopped).

Our steadly expanding bottled list has thirty-five selections in addition to the thirty-five that are on tap.
