21st Annual Fall Festival Of Craft Breweries

Friday October 2, 5 to 10 p.m.

The time has come to embrace the cooler weather and the advent of pub season with C'est What's annual Fall Beer Festival. Dozens of breweries and even more brews to choose from in sample sizes.

While the line-up is far from complete, there are going to be two notable entries: C'est What Big Butt, our newest seasonal ale made with smoked malt and a touch of fennel seed as well as a cask of authentic early-nineteenth century beer from Black Creek Brewery.

The Black Creek offering (brewhouse and casks pictured) will be, in the words of their owner, "..a warm, flat, dark lumpy beer... People would have to be forewarned that it was brewed without any electricity and over an open flame so it will not be their normal beer." This will undoubtedly be more true to form than the brews purported to be made from the ancient family recipe.

We will post more details as they are confirmed but we know that there is no admission charge and most samples will cost a loonie.

Bar Towel Award

Seventh consecutive year

While we like to think that we have no competition in our quest for "true local flavour", there are more and more enlightened establishments helping ensure that you are never far away from a good pint in our fair city. So, it is heartening to have received the Bar Towel award for best draught selection every year since it's inception. The Bar Towel site is a great place to visit if drinking the beer is only the starting point for your fledgling barley obsession.

Flickershow

Julian and Eli (photo: Kelly Clipperton)"Music where melody is king, but words rule from behind the throne."

A flickershow is a movie, and Flickershow's music has a touch of the cinematic in its clever lyrics… Plenty of romance, of course. Glories and falls along the way. A hilarious comedic turn. Offbeat characters who fascinate and amuse. And the cinematography is mighty fine too.

The music? Clever, hooky, eclectic pop, with a dash of Belle & Sebastian and Elvis Costello, or perhaps Ron Sexsmith or Camper Van Beethoven.

Singers Julian Sark and Eli McIlveen have been playing music together since high school. Years later, they reunited in Toronto and snagged the name Flickershow from a bit of old-timey slang in The Green Mile.

Wednesday September 16, Doors 9:00 p.m., Show time 9:30 p.m., Advance tickets are available for $5.00

Jerry Stamp

"Jerry Stamp is releasing five albums this year - what are you doing?" -The Scope Magazine

Jerry Stamp hates writing in the third person about himself and pretending somebody else did it! So he won't. Here is the quick and dirty:

I graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2002 and promptly moved to Toronto with my band King Nancy. We lived there for four years slugging it out, playing gigs, making records (3 studio albums, and 2 live albums) and touring anywhere that would have us. But after four years of the aforementioned slugging We decided it was time to move home, get away from the business of music and get back to the love of it. So we wrote one last album while in Toronto ('This Is Not A High-Five') and recorded it with renowned indie producer Andy Magoffin (Great Lake Swimmers, Jim Guthrie, Two Minute Miracles) before we packed up the van and took her home.

Once home I began playing high energy, emotionally intense solo gigs and focusing on that as my main musical output. I took on a regular weekly gig to keep me on my toes and began writing and rearranging songs for solo performance; quickly garnering a new fan base. Last year I played over 120 shows, got myself a home studio setup and began recording. I released 'Racing Bad Weather' in December of 2008 in conjunction with an Eastern Canadian tour. The winter of 2009 I began writing and haven't stopped yet. That was when I decided to push myself to release 5 albums in one calendar year. With 'Racing Bad Weather' already out and plans to release 2 Christmas albums just in time for the yule season of 2009, I had to squeeze out two more albums. The lengthy titled 'There Is Something In Me That Makes Me Like To Think I Wish I Could Be' to be released in July, and the follow-up 'Bloodwork' to be released in late august. Each album containing 13 tracks of brand new material. Written, recorded and mixed at home.

The Past: I grew up in St. John's, Newfoundland, edge of the known universe, where old world and new world collide. It is impossible to not absorb that culture and make it part of you and your music. Many years of singing in award winning and world traveling choirs led me to enter the Bachelor of Classical Music degree program at Memorial University (yes, I sing opera!). I figured if I was going to pursue a career in the music industry I had best know what I was at!

"Excellent songwriter. And without question the best singer on the island (of Newfoundland) today" -Chris Batstone, Assistant Program Director 97-5 K-Rock

"What is truly impressive about Stamp is his impressive vocal abilities and his heartfelt songwriting" -Kevin Kelly, The Newfoundland Herald
