groovelily
groovelily
is a melodic rock band. Their music has been described as
"Paula Cole attacking Ben Folds Five and Dave Matthews with
a pointy electric violin."
Valerie
Vigoda, electric violinist and singer, is the founding
member of groovelily. She recently returned from touring the
world with Cyndi Lauper/Tina Turner, and then with
Joe Jackson. Now she is hitting the road again with
her own band. Vigoda is a classically-trained
musician, former army lieutenant, and the youngest woman
ever admitted to Princeton University. In 1994, she released
her first album, inhabit my heart, to critical
acclaim.
"To
call Valerie Vigoda talented barely seems to do her justice.
She has a great voice, is an intelligent lyricist...and an
ace violinist."
~ Dirty Linen Magazine
Brendan
Milburn, who sings and plays piano and organ, is from an
entirely different school of music - as a kid he learned to
play piano while listening to the radio, and earned his rent
during college and grad school by playing rock and roll in
bars. His two-fisted, rhythmic piano playing is reminiscent
of early Billy Joel, or more recently, Ben Folds
Five. Before joining forces with Valerie, he played with
Ben Harper and Clarence Clemons. After
graduating from Pomona College and NYU in musical theatre
composition, Brendan returned to his true calling: pop
music. Referring to a groovelily song he penned, the
Columbia Free Times wrote, "Tell Me What's On Your
Mind is a perfect pop nugget."
Gene
Lewin plays the drums. His eclectic, tasteful, joyful
work on the drum kit has been favorably compared to that of
Carter Beauford (of the Dave Matthews Band).
After graduating from Princeton University -- where he first
met Vigoda - Gene earned a Master's degree from the
Manhattan School of Music. He performed there with Clark
Terry, Paquito D'Rivera, Harvie Swartz,
Harold Danko, and Kenny Werner. In between
groovelily shows, Gene also co-leads the jazz quintet
Fundementia and the guitar/flute/drums trio The
Gene Lewin Project.
