Justin Haynes

Local guitar hero Justin Haynes brings in his spacious, mood driven sound blending organic grooves with samples and techno sound effects. At times ambient and sparse, Haynes ear for melodic lines find their mark through the looping soundscape as he makes every note seem effortless.

Justin Haynes (Guitar) with Jordan O'Connor (Double Bass), Jean Martin (Drums), Nick Fraser (Drums)

Justin's early musical training began with the classical guitar. He later went on to study jazz guitar and composition with Rod Ellias, Ralph Towner, and Gary Peacock. Now 27, he has performed across Canada, the US, and Scandinavia, at Jazz, Folk, New Music, and Chamber Music festivals with the likes of Kevin Turcotte, Nexus, Tena Palmer, Rebecca Campbell, Ian Tamblyn, Andy Stochansky, Cate Friesen, Hilmar Jensson, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

Haynes has worked under film composer Howard Shore and appeared on the soundtrack to Saul Rubineck's film, Jerry & Tom. He was also featured prominently on the soundtrack to Amnon Buchbinder's film, The Fishing Trip.

As a composer, Justin has written for various groups over the years. He has also contributed music, most recently as a producer, to CBC radio shows, including Jazzbeat, Artscape, Nightlines, Heartland, and Radiosonic, among others.

He has recently completed a critically acclaimed soundtrack for the Nightwsimming production of Jane Urquhart's The Whirlpool, adapted by Brian Quirt. The play was produced this spring in the mainspace at Toronto's Tarragon Theatre.

Other recent commissions include a live performance of original music for the German silent film, Der Golem, as part of the Ashkenaz Festival at Harbourfront in Toronto, and two short independent films, Landscaping, by Paul Carrierre, and Three Lives of Kate, by Ian Thompson and Karen Hanson.

Haynes has just completed an album with Rebecca Campbell entitled Tug, which features the two musicians performing original material with astring quartet. Tug was co-produced with David Travers-Smith.
