Joan Smith when joan was 14, she wanted to be the bassist for white zombie. that chick had awesome hair. alas, her parents said that buying her a bass would be useless, since she’d need a band to make any sort of worthwhile noises. they bought her an acoustic guitar instead, and joan covered tori amos, sarah mclachlan and (urk) jewel songs. eventually, she started writing her own tori and jewel-esque songs. people liked ‘em alright.
joan went to queen’s university to learn how to be a real actor. She graduated with the knowledge that she no longer wanted to cover ‘chick rock’, as well as the desire to never again play a male pirate in a musical theatre production. joan moved back to Toronto with two missions: to play music, and avoid playing lilith fair.
years after being denied the privilege of her own bass, she was fortunate enough to find a rhythm section starring Craig Reid and Julian Vardy (currently known as 'the huxtables'). Joan has appeared at various venues in Toronto, such as free times café, clinton’s, reilly’s, and the tranzac. joan’s also honing her Robert Plant impression, shoving her imaginary man junk into tight dungarees with the tribute band, red zeppelin. she has been told that she 'plays guitar like a guy', and her music is described as...well, nobody really ever tells her to her face. but she sings real loud sometimes. oh yeah, she also went to school for radio broadcasting – ask her to speak and she’ll ask you for money.
