Jorane (8pm show)Jorane sings in a carnal voice, a vibration coming from deep inside. The music itself and the ambiances are what really counts.
Where does she come from? What does she play and even what is she playing at? A game where she invents her own rules. Singer and cellist, a dangerous liaison, which Jorane can assert herself, beaming on stage. The one who disturbs our habits began by disturbing her teachers, during her classical training. Unfaithful or very faithful to herself, she built passionate and successive relations with 3 instruments.
Childhood memories come back with the sound of the piano. There was one in the family home in Quebec City. At the age of 5 she plays with determination but the compulsory figures already irate the little girl. At six, she quits. Not the music of course, but her classes. She reproduces by ear everything her father, a Chopin enthusiast, listens to, and recounts stories while playing. ‘When things were going right and when they were going bad, it’s with the piano that I would let everything out. It comforted me and let me express myself.’ Adolescence like a curved guitar is the time where Jorane learns the six-cord art. As a Cegep student, she begins to win prizes with the cello, which she discovered later at the age of 19.
It quickly becomes a form of maternal language for Jorane, a matrix. ‘I rehearsed like a wild person, up to 8 hours a day. I like the left-handed choreography on the instrument. I see it as dance.’ Today, Jorane reminisces that even before playing this instrument for the first time, like a meeting with destiny, she proclaimed at sixteen: ‘One day, I will sing with my cello. Someone then answered: no, your voice is too high-pitched and the cello is too grave. But I can’t remember if it is a dream or a souvenir.’
Jorane resembles an elf that surges with her voice and her virtuoso left hand, out of nocturnal moor. That is why she created a language, using her voice as in instrument, at times improvising, scatting, like the great ladies of jazz.
It is on use to try to play influential game with her. Introspection: a confrontation between urges, taste and the dangers of the absolute.
