Lise Monique and The Wintermitts With a cup of flower, a dash of water and a few sprinkles of French flavoured spices, Lise Monique, a young songster originally from Chilliwack BC, was born. As a young child she often felt awkward falling victim to being called "CARROT TOP" and having the majority of the population call her "LISA".
Lise Monique joined brownies at a young age to learn everything that mattered 1. how to give the peace sign and 2. how to boss other kids around in order to make things happen. She soon after proceeded to Girl guides but was removed shortly after a year as she was considered a "bad ass".
Her musical debut was not until the age of 6 when she would pester her mother with a blue recorder, playing "songs", she would call her own. After nagging her parents to enrol her in flute lessons, she begun private lessons at the Music Academy, at the shy age of 9. She was horrible; in fact she could only play for 20 mins on end. This girl was not in any shape or form to become a musician.
Teenage years came full force as Lise Monique discovered "riot grrrls" and punk/grunge rock. She purchased her first shit guitar from a pawnshop and started an all girl band at the age of 12 playing dark original tunes. Unfortunately they thought they were going to be the NEXT BIG THING...that didn't turn out according to planned.
Friends, school, sports and everything in between then distracted Lise until a few years later when she decided to start playing the bass guitar. Her first bass in hand was a BC RICH "Warlock" bass...hardcore she was. This gig lasted for a few years until she retired to become a snowboard jock. Soon after graduation she lived on a few ski hills but became lonely/depressed/confused/disoriented therefore started to pick up the guitar again. Slowly, she started writing her own material and singing, something she had yet to explore.
This hobby developed into a passion and one late day of December '04 she conquered her biggest fear...playing for the public. As she never perceived herself as a singer it was the most intimidating task known to humans. She did it.
Now living in Vancouver BC, Lise Monique has had a year of playing around the city, touring Washington State twice, recording an EP and playing with a band under her belt
She met a lovely boy named David with great artistic ability, not only in design but also with creating music. They bonded as bandmates/friends instantly, David having a soft spot for the bilingual singer/songwriters, he collaborated with Lise Monique on a few songs and has since become the founder and core member of the Wintermitts. He is what keeps Lise sane. They play on a regular basis for the sake of having fun and eating delicious home cooked vegan meals. They also plan on playing your town soon enough...
*********
Lise is backed by the Wintermitts, which are the brainchild of Hamilton, Ontario to Vancouver, BC transplant David Thomas Manzl. David is joined by Shane the percussionist and a few other occasional guest musicians. The Wintermitts take their name from the lovely Julie Doiron song and their sound is a blend of acoustic instrumentation from accordions to glockenspiels. The band strives to create thoughtful, unpredictable and unpretentious music.
