TWILL

Torontonians, as we all know, are blessed with living in a city with one hell of an arts scene. From world-class music to fashion, theatre to the spoken word, dance to photography, and painting to performance art, somewhere in that spectrum there is something for everyone.

As artists living in the city, we are lucky to have access to some wonderful arts-oriented research centres, clinics, retreat facilities and developmental programs which are indispensable in their value to the art community. Too often, however, we see these amazing resources suffer from lack of funding, lack of public awareness of their value, and a basic lack of tangible support from some of the very people who most benefit from their existence.

On June 3rd, 2004 at 10PM the first installment in what is going to be a quarterly performance series will be taking place at Cest What. The event is going to be called TWILL, a loose acronym for This is Where I Live. The shows are going to feature innovative, exciting local artists from various disciplines, and the money from each night will then be donated to a deserving Toronto-based arts organization.

It is our plan, for the first show, to donate the proceeds collected to the ARTSCAPE Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts on Toronto Island. Countless artists from many disciplines all walks of life have benefited enormously from the programs offered by this wonderful facility set against the peaceful backdrop of Toronto Island, just minutes from the heart of the city. Several streams of activity make Gibraltar Point a unique resource for creative thinkers from Toronto and around the world including: The Retreat Centre, a meeting facility serving non-profit, government and education sectors, Artscape Lodge, an affordable short-term studio and bedroom rental service for artists looking to escape the distractions of their day-to-day lives in exchange for the art-centric environs of the centre, and The Artists Residency Program, an annual juried program providing 10 artists with 30 days of uninterrupted time to think, experiment, create and interact. Specifically, it is the Artist's Residency Program that the proceeds from TWILL 1 are going to be donated to.
