The 15th Annual Festival Of Small Breweries

Our 15th Festival Of Small Breweries was observed by hundreds of beer lovers amid the dust of ongoing renovations on Friday November 7, 2003. There were thirty-three craft brews from which to choose. Fortunately the line-ups at the doors did not extend to the washrooms where the new plumbing facilities made for a much easier transition between sample cup and flush. It seems that our bartenders are now waiting for the "no touch" system to extend to our draught taps.

Here's a statistical summary of the evenings proceedings:

  • Best Of The Festival for the fourth time in the last five years was the St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout finishing with a median score of 41 out of 50. We may as well give McAuslan a lifetime achievement award, disqualify their Oatmeal Stout from further competition, and give all of the other brewers out there a chance for glory. Runners-up were the St. Ambroise Apricot Wheat at 41 points, the Dennisons Weissbier, and Mill Street Tankhouse Ale at 39. Little fault was found in any of the thirty-three sampled with only ten scoring under thirty-five and the lowest score was an entirely drinkable rating of thirty.
  • The Most Curious award for the most tasted beer goes to Black Oak Nutcracker Porter. The crowds were eager to try Niagara Falls Eisbock and Dennison's Weissbier as well.
  • Every year we mention the brave (or foolhardy) few that ignore all public service announcements and decide that they just have to try anything that we pour for them. This year the Kid In A Candy Store award was shared by no fewer than eight individuals who rated each of the thirty-three samples offered. This impressive number is perhaps due to the fact that there were six fewer samples to be had than in 2002 but is still a Herculean feat. A couple of these tasters were so taken with their responsibilities that they scored the food and the beer "belchability" (Lamburger 46 of 50, and Waupoos Cider 5 of 5)

Year after year our local brewers prove their mettle before the critical masses of beer geeks and weekend warriors that make this festival an annual success. Cheers!
