Irish Whiskey Tasting

Leading up to St. Paddy's day we decided to check out the part of Irish culture that is hidden beyond the advertising campaign for Guinness. We dug out of our cellar Bushmills Malt 10 yr., Jameson 1780 12 yr., Knappogue Castle 12 yr., Kilbeggan, Paddy, Red Breast 12 yr., and The Tyrconnell who were put up against Ireland's best selling John Power Gold Label.

The results were split between those who favoured the finesse of a lighter bodied style of whiskey and those looking for the substantial character of a single malt scotch whisky. As a result, the median scoring ended up rather tight with no runaway winners or losers. It can certainly be said that there are good value whiskies of all styles in the Irish family.
