Uisge beatha or usquebaugh are two different spellings of the old Gaelic term for "water of life." This, to English speaking people, sounded like "uishgi" and over time was corrupted to "whisky."

tullamore dewIrish Whiskey Tasting

How good can it get?

On Wednesday March 15, 2006 a few of our patrons investigated the world of Irish whiskey to determine if the difference between the regular and premium versions of the same brand are significant or worthwhile. This was purely an educational exercise that had nothing to do with getting a head start on the festivities which traditionally are observed two days after this event.

The results seem to indicate that if you want the best Irish whiskey from a particular distillery, price is a reasonable indication of quality. The only exception to this is Black Bush which finished lower than the lower priced Bushmills.

However, price alone will not help you select the finest tasting whiskey. The two highest priced whiskeys, Jameson 18 yr. and Tullamore Dew Heritage placed one-two. However, the regular Tullamore Dew finished a close third at about a third of the price of the top finisher - besting the premium priced Bushmills Malt and Jameson 12 yr.
