tankhouse aleThe 2nd Annual Spring Festival Of Small Breweries

From a lager made with Maple sap instead of water (Heritage Maple Bush Lager) to True North Double Oatmeal Treacle Stout to a beer called Durham Hop Addict, our Second Annual Spring Festival was full of surprises and featured some very imaginative work from our local breweries. Thirty-six creative creations from twenty-six breweries were available for sampling. Twenty-five of these brews were new to C'est What.

A panel of three dozen beer aficionados (in plain English, "beer geeks") from bartowel.com got together at C'est What three days before the event to preview ten of the more interesting offerings. They picked five "must taste" beers for festival goers: Mill Street Tankhouse Cask Ale, Durham Hop Addict, Church-Key Bier de Garde, Church-Key Pale Ale, and Black Oak Whiskey Barrel Aged Nut Brown Ale.

At the event, nearly two thousand samples were poured and from the score sheets submitted we can summarize:

  • Following up on their victory in our festival last September with their filtered version of the brew, Mill St. Tankhouse Cask Ale finished at the head of the pack with a median score of 43 out of 50. If they can repeat this result at our next festival we will have to retire Tankhouse to our Hall Of Fame along with our first inductee, St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout. Wellington County Special Pale Ale (casked and dry-hopped), and Black Oak Whiskey Barrel Aged Nut Brown Ale both received scores of forty or more and qualify for honourable mentions.
  • The bartowelers and festival-goers were in agreement on the merits of Mill St., Black Oak, and Durham's offerings but were not quite as simpatico on King Pilsner (un-filtered), Neustadt L'Ale, and Stonehammer Pilsner which all found more favour at the festival.
  • Seventeen beers finished above the very respectable score of 36.0.
  • The Most Curious award for the most tasted beer goes to Black Oak Whiskey Barrel Aged Nut Brown Ale. Of the non-highlighted brews, the Scotch Irish Chaplain's Solace was the most popular sample.
  • With all of the attention on the unique products, some of our most popular brands did not elicit much interest with beers like St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout and C'est What Coffee Porter scoring over forty but not being rated by enough samplers to be included in the results.

Avalanche from the album Love Is Hell, Pt. 1 by Ryan Adams
Beth in Battle Mode + Guests
Saturday, October 25, 10:00 PM
In an age where many bands boast bloated memberships, Beth In Battle Mode is creating as much noise with just three members. This economical approach is also reflected in the songs: short, catchy and direct. Describing the resulting music, however,...
