Uisge beatha or usquebaugh are two different spellings of the old Gaelic term for "water of life." This, to English speaking people, sounded like "uishgi" and over time was corrupted to "whisky."

bushmills 10St.Patrick's Irish Whiskey Tasting

On Wednesday March 16, 2005 we presented seven fine Irish Whikeys for consideration. These were not all of the traditional character, most were single malts with prices to match. Flavour profiles varied from bourbon like to scotch similar.

In the end our advice is not to purchase on company name alone. Bushmills Malt 16 yr. ($70) ranked the highest with a median score of 22 (of 30) but the Bushmills 10 yr. and Bushmills Single Cask only managed to garner 18.5 and 16.5 points respectively. While this is not so bad for the $36 ten year old, it is a very disappointing result for the $86 single cask.

The winner of a coiuple of our previous Irish tastings, Red Breast 12, did not fare as well as usual with a rating of 19.5, but is still quite a reasonable value at $34.
